DOUGLAS v RUNCORN by Gethin Taylor

It seems slightly incongruous that Powergen League Rugby season is here again with the rolling acres of Port E Chee looking like the Serengeti at the end of the dry season. With the ground rock hard the players like the far better looking migrating Wilderbeast are frantically scanning the skies in the hope of rain.

In the past such conditions would have expected to suit Douglas as generally the club has been known for playing running rugby rather than the less flamboyant ten man style of its near neighbour. This is partly a reflection of philosophy but also to an extent the strength of the players available. In the past couple of seasons this has been less so as Douglas have strengthened the pack and whilst they still have flair and pace outside they can now muscle a win if required.

A big performance from the pack may be what is required on Saturday if Douglas are to win as traditionally Runcorn are a big powerful side. Being the first match of the season there is obviously no form guide. It would be unwise to take much notice of Runcorn’s relegation last season as this was largely down to having numerous points deducted presumably for fielding ineligible players. If this had not been the case they would have comfortably stayed in the division. It could therefore be a good early test for Douglas although a lot will depend upon what mood Runcorn turn up in and whether they are concentrating on the their rugby.

Douglas will not be at full strength as back row man Pete Moorhouse is off the Island for exams. There are also doubts over flanker Chris Darnhill and backs Martin Reeny, Gwyn Davies and Gareth Leather who have all picked up niggling injuries from training and playing on the hard grounds. New captain Andy Malpass will be hoping that one or two of the backs recover as whilst he has plenty of cover in the forwards the pool of talent is not quite so deep in the backs.

The match which kicks of at 2.30 is sponsored by Meespierson/Intertrust who are the sponsors of this years first team kit. They also hosted the last major event on the pitches at the club when they professionally hosted an “It’s a Knockout” competition. Provided Douglas put together a professional team performance I would expect them to win. Whilst it is not a certain home banker it is certainly a game I would contemplate playing the Joker to double up the points if you could.
